The Matthew Ball Quintet is a jazz ensemble of professional musicians who are all graduates from Leeds College of Music. They play original arrangements and compositions in a wide range of styles from New Orleans to Modern Jazz. They are very popular on the northern jazz scene and were featured as one of Jazz Yorkshire’s showcase bands for 2006, with performances at Scarborough Jazz Festival, The Wardrobe and a Live Lounge session for BBC radio. The quintet also performed at Wigan International Jazz Festival in July 2007.

Great set, great arrangements, great front-man … What a way to open the final day [of the Scarborough Jazz Festival 2006]

Alan Barnes, award-winning saxophonist

Matt Ball's excellent quintet offers the archetype of a hard bop band… With good presentation, communicative announcements, tidy matching suits, a thoughtful programme, and a twelve-bar sting to end the set neatly, the quintet provided an enjoyable professional performance.

John Robert Brown, Chairman of the Saxophone Society of Great Britain

The Matthew Ball Quintet plays a mixture of original compositions and standard songs, all arranged to push the boundaries of the instruments … In contrast to these exciting innovative arrangements the band also uses flugal/trombone to produce mellow timbres and sustained intensity during ballads.

Jazz Yorkshire

The ensemble performs a varied programme, encompassing Matthew’s exciting original compositions, such as the New Orleans influenced three-part suite Street Beat Blues, piano feature Underused and Sanctimonious Silver, reminiscent of the work of Horace Silver. In addition, the group performs fresh arrangements of classic jazz material, including compositions by Duke Ellington, Cannonball Adderley and Cole Porter. The Quintet can also be heard featuring vocalist Anthony Kinsey performing Matthew’s arrangements of songs from the Great American Songbook.
